Day 225
Subject 237 is not meeting expectations, unlike its otherkin, our lab researchers have deemed this experiment as a dead end. It has been a long few weeks. The subject refuses to eat, or doesn’t know how still, has been recorded to scream at the top of its lungs for hours, and refuses to listen to commands. As useful as able bodies can be in a work force, this creature seems to be determined to never see the light of day.
Side notes:
There has been new cruel punishments given by chief of staff when dealing with subject 237. Some involve whippings, others are more… gruesome than anything. It’s not only the subject suffering but us researchers as well. I personally think a screw came loose recently especially with the high demand for subjects and many are showing to be unsuccessful.
There has also been word from outer worlds that many planetary and movement leaders are talking about shutting down our facilities. I do not see this as a concern for we also have grown most of this system’s working class citizens, helping governments through taxes and work forces through bodies for labor. The ones who truly suffer are the researchers like me who don’t get credit where credit is due. ------
-X Signing off.
The lab researchers jotted down notes as they watched through the one way mirror. Their creature, their creation, a mixture of biomechanics, gene splicing, and mind development, yet they never expected such disappointment from their work. “I swear Carlson,” one of the head leads spoke while turning towards the researching group, “If this thing doesn’t show signs of improvement, I will personally beat you and the thing to death!” Everyone stared, stone faced as they looked around and watched the wailing creature on the ground, curled up in a tight, naked ball. They had tried to provide it food, but it wouldn't eat, tried to clothe it but it would just rip the suits to shreds. Its body was strange to say the least. Especially in the human lab growing alien creatures. It had a head that they could mostly all a goat with two grey horns jetting from its temple towards the back of its head. Its claws were sharp and resembled more of a wild beast than a man, while its three slender tails moved freely like serpents. The pale white blotches near its left eye and chest were only a few of the visible defects from the splicing procedures, the rest would come and go, nothing new to the development team.
As the lab head broke away from the group, the scientists went to work. Those dedicated to subject 225 stayed put. I sat in deafening silence as the lab assistance spoke quietly, no doubt about me. I am Carlson. Carlson Xeno Grapher. I’m no strapping young man, my red hair turning silver, my posture still slim, but short as ever. Was never really a tall guy to begin with. Walking towards the window, I waved my assistance away from the room before I waited for the sliding metal door to close. “Nickolas,” I pressed the intercom button, allowing my voice to echo off the halls. I spoke as gently as I could, “Nickolas, stop crying, it will be ok.” I watched the small figure, nothing taller than three feet, ears folded back and eyes as red as blood. Tears pooled and streamed down the small face and cheeks. I shook my head and looked around me. “This is my lab,” I spoke under my breath, ,”You are my creation, you are mine, and I’m sorry that they have hurt you. Listen…” glancing over my shoulder, I made sure no onlookers were nearby, “I can help you, but you must trust me. Can you do that?” The creature stared straight through me. I felt a cold spindel of fear crawl up my spine, like an icy pike stabbing the back of my head. “I know that’s your doing Nickolas, I can’t help you if you don’t behave.” I motioned through the mirror. I knew he could see me. I knew it. It's a feeling of hatred when my creature locks eyes with you. Even at such a young and innocent stage of life, we have taught him hatred. Turning the com system off, I went to my lab bench and began reviewing notes:
Hates humans that work here,
Has been beaten for the last three weeks solid
Refuses to listen
Refuses to understand basic speech
Refuses to respond
Refuses to eat
Refuses to drink
Refuses to sleep
I sighed quietly and shook my head, “I will help you Nickolas, I promise.”
Nickolas sat in his cell, wiping his eyes as he faced the blank cement wall. His head pounded furiously, his eyes felt like they were bulging, his tears subsided as he dry heaved on his own. Let me go! Let me go! No more! Please no more! His floppy ears shot to the side as he heard the electronic locks unhinge and the metal sliding door open behind him. His arms began to tremble, his head shaking, eyes closed tight as his figure collapsed to the floor, curling up into a ball as his claws pressed against his temples and eyes, “NO MORE!”
“You will not talk back to me!” A gruff voice responded along with a loud CRACK! Nickolas grunted as the leather whip lashed out against his back, leaving a large red slash, “You worthless piece of trash, we are discontinuing your division after tomorrow, worthless waste of time.” CRACK! The whip bit like a viper, leaving a large bloody X on his back before the man left. As the door closed, he spoke to the computer AI system of the building, “Computer, decontaminate cell 225.”
“Decontaminating cell 225, confirmation?”
“Confirmed.”
Nickolas looked up as the roof of his cell opened to reveal a sprinkler system, “Decontamination in progress.” The hot water and steam began to jet through the cell, steaming up the windows and walls, “AHHHH!” Nickolas screamed in agony as his fresh wounds and flesh burned. Stop. Stop, stop stop stop stop! I came back from lunch and pulled up a chair next to the window only to freeze. The lab assistance covered their mouths with their clipboards as they took notes. Anger boiling in my veins, I snapped my view towards my coworkers, “What happened?” I spoke slowly, my eyes locked on the group of seven, three women, four men. They all met my gaze with silence. “Did you do this?” I stepped forward towards the man in front of the group. He was taller than me by a foot, but my anger knocked his ego down four notches, “Well? Did you!”
“No sir, Exaviour did.”
Growling curses under my breath, I dismissed my team, “All of you get yourselves relocated right now! If you can’t make yourselves useful servants to the cause or law, then get out of my sight!” I stood alone. Not one stayed. Turning around towards the one way mirror, I watched the shambling figure, hunched on its knees, back bleeding. Pitiful.
Nickolas sat in the far right corner of his cell, the lights turned off twenty minutes ago. The last time he had tried to sleep, one of the lab workers snuck a creature in his cell. He had been bitten and torn by his arms and legs to the point he had to get surgery. He was not going to let that happen again. In normal timing, the metal door unlocked with a quiet CLICK! Nickolas sat in silence, his eyes wide and ready to strike. Unfolding his small claws, his tails swayed as he hunched low to the ground. Staying silent, he could make out the silhouette of the intruder and lunged.
Call me stupid, but I couldn’t do this anymore. I couldn’t work here, not with these tyrants. Once everyone went to their sleeping quarters, I needed to see subject 225. I needed to make sure he would be ok and check on his psyche. To say it in the most positive manner, it was never good, but I had to try. Unlocking the door, I opened the darkened hall into pure darkness. I had never realized how dark the cell truly was until I stepped in. I couldn’t see a thing. Hunching down, I could feel the all too familiar chill crawling up my spine, “Nicholas… its me, I’m-” BAM! I felt the small fleshy form bashed head first into my chest, its hard head and horns knocked the wind out of me while its claws sank into my sides. Stifling a holler, I wrapped my arms around Nickolas and locked him in place above me. The creature was smaller than me, sure, but it had all the biological tools needed to end my life in a second. The low grunts and growls mixed with tearful cries as it shook vigorously, trying to break free, “Let me go!”
I shook my head as I stayed still, feeling the sharp claws trying to claw at me, “Hush Nickolas, hush, It’s ok, I’m a friend.” Nickolas tried to snarl only to release a whimper. If it wasn’t for the situation I would have almost called it cute. I slowly began to loosen my grip as I felt the flailing claws and tails slow down. “It’s ok, I’m not going to hurt you.” I could feel my sides slowly getting wet from the blood as I winced, “It’s all going to be ok. I promise.”
Nickolas looked at me in the darkness with what I could only assume was confusion. It stood above me, head tilted and tail stilling as its tip curled around my ankle. Taking a shakey breath, it knelt down and whispered, struggling to come up with words, “Y-you torture me”
“Nickolas, that isn’t me, I-” grabbing my sides, I tried to talk only to feel a claw talon press against my lips.
“You report on me, feed me, made me, study me, torture me. You grew me.” I stammered, baffled at the creature’s insight as I tried to slowly stand only to feel Nickolas’s tail tighten around my ankles. “You came here to try and help… you would have hurt me by now if you meant to.” Its voice was broken, raspy, struggling to even form its ideas into words.
“Please, come with me to my lab, we can end this quietly, I can free you.” I pleaded quietly as my sides raged with fiery pain, my hands seeping with blood.
Nickolas loosened his tail as he shook his head, “How? How do I know you aren’t lying?” he spoke in a hushed and hurt voice, “You have lied to me so many times, hurt me even more, why do you continue to hurt me? What did I ever do to you!” He called out to me, his small innocent voice bouncing off the metal walls making my heart sink.
I found myself dumbstruck. Without thinking, I grabbed Nickolas’s tail and pulled it roughly towards me. He snarled as a piercing headache struck me, “I know your powers.” Speaking as strongly as I could, I wrapped my arms around its small figure and hugged it gently,”and I’m sorry for the pain I caused. I’m so sorry.” Tears escaped my eyes, my head feeling as if it was wishing to dig out of my skull, “Please, help me to my lab, and I will get you out of here.”
